We are looking for one or two ambitious student assistants for two large research projects on immigration and integration of disadvantaged groups. The projects are headed by Associate Professor Mette Foged (University of Copenhagen).
Project
Europe was still grappling with the aftermath of the Syrian refugee crisis when Ukrainians displaced by the Russian invasion fled into the European Union in 2022. Worldwide, the number of forcibly displaced people is record high (100 million) and Europe currently hosts 8 million displaced from the war in Ukraine alone. The flow of people from destabilized regions to more resourced and stable countries is likely to continue and governments are seeking better ways to accommodate displaced people and integrate those who are granted residence into society.
There is a long tradition in economics of studying economic integration of immigrants. Much less is known about social and cultural integration and the role of mental health in early integration outcomes. You will work with an international group of researchers, who have two overarching research questions to fill this gap: First, we study how social networks and public policies affect the socio-economic and cultural integration of immigrant-origin families. Second, we look at the interdependence of mental health and early integration outcomes (partly in collaboration with researchers from Psychology).
Primary tasks and qualifications
The main tasks will involve processing administrative register data and survey data at Statistics Denmark, preparing working datasets, doing descriptive analyses, and conducting various econometric estimations.
The student assistant will be data processing in SAS and Stata. Prior experience with these programming languages is therefore a plus but not a prerequisite to be hired.
The student assistant will be part of a larger research group that includes several postdocs at the Department of Economics. As the team includes non-Danish speakers, much of the work will take place in English.
The position offers an opportunity to observe leading research in the making. It is thus an ideal opportunity for strong students who may be considering a career in research. Both bachelor and master level candidates are encouraged to apply.
Terms and conditions
The position is for 15 hours weekly on average and the duration of the position is up to 2 years. The terms are flexible and most of the work can be done remotely and outside of business hours if desired.
Appointment and salary will be according to the current agreement between the Ministry of Finance and HK, and is positioned as a student-HK.
The minimum wage is 132,24 DKK. Your salary will be based on seniority.
In order to be considered for the position, you must be enrolled and active as a student at university level.
